Embryo transfer is the last step of in vitro fertilization (IVF) / ICSI. Finally, and after having gone through a great many obstacles, starting from ovarian stimulation, ultrasound tests, ova retrieval, in vitro fertilization (IVF) until the embryo or embryos are finally placed inside the uterine cavity.

By Dr. Elizabetta Ricciarelli, Co-Director of  FIVMadrid.

Embryo transfer is, without any doubt, the most important and exciting moment of all fertility treatments. For the patient, the procedure is painless and requires no anesthesia, it can be compared to a citology because of the gynecological position as well as the speculum. In FIVMadrid, we always make the transfer under ultrasound guidance which allows the plysician and the patient direct visualization of the catheter with the embryos at all times.

Pregnancy test must be done a fortnight after embryo transfer. These two weeks of waiting are described as the most anxious moments of the entire process of in vitro fertilization. The expectancy of becoming pregnant is high and the biggest concern for women is not to spoil everything, not to make any mistakes that could jeopardize the implementation.

The most frequent questions weare asked are: Is there anything I can do to help embryo implantation?  How many days shall I rest? If I do complete bed rest along these days, will my chances of pregnancy increase? There is only one answer to all these questions:

“relax, take it easy, enjoy every moment, go out for a walk and lead a normal life”. All these things can have a positive influence, in particular, emotional balance! Do not forget that women who have no fertility problems and conceive naturally, do not know exactly when they have become pregnant, so they do not rest or reduce their daily activities. Likewise, it is not necessary to reduce your daily activity after an embryo transfer unless you make a permanent excessive physical exercise.

Although there are no studies to prove the necessity of rest, a reasonable 2-3 day rest after embryo transfer may have a positive impact because women devote more time to themselves, relax, spend time with their partners, try to create a favourable environment without stress and thus help embryo implantation. These are all the reasons why we recommend it in FIVMadrid.
